5 ChatGPT Prompts To Turn Your Layoff Into Your Best Career Move Yet

This article originally appeared on Forbes.com.

A layoff can feel like a sucker punch, a slap in the face and a gut-wrenching loss—all at the same time. One second, you’re certain about your professional identity, your career trajectory, your financial plans. The next, you’re frantically updating your LinkedIn and “one-click” applying to as many jobs as possible. If any of this resonates, you’re far from alone.

U.S. employers announced over 1.2 million job cuts in 2025, according to consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas—the highest level since 2020. The “2025 Challenger Report” revealed the sectors most impacted: government, tech, warehousing, retail, services, media and news. Perhaps most striking, however, is that between February and June 2025, nearly 300,000 Black women exited the U.S. labor force, pushed out by federal downsizing among other factors.

Job seekers face a lengthier road than many realize in 2026. While data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that, on average, it takes workers over six months (24.4 weeks) as of December 2025 to find new employment, many professionals—especially those in competitive white-collar fields—are experiencing significantly longer searches. These five ChatGPT prompts can help you defy the odds and turn your layoff into your best career move yet.

1. Process The Emotional Reality Of Your Layoff

Before jumping into reactive action mode, give yourself permission and time to process what’s coming up for you. Layoffs often trigger feelings of genuine grief—loss of identity, community, financial security and routine all at once. Anger, relief, anxiety, numbness, shame—all of these are normal reactions. This prompt helps you process that reality so you can move forward intentionally, confidently and productively.

And remember, these prompts are starting points—don’t be afraid to adapt them, challenge ChatGPT’s responses, ask follow-up questions and iterate until the guidance feels genuinely tailored to your situation.

ChatGPT Prompt:

I was laid off from my role as [job title/role] at [company] on [date]. I’ve been feeling [describe emotions: sad, upset, angry, relieved, confused, disappointed, anxious, numb, ashamed, embarrassed, etc.]. My biggest concerns right now are [list top 3 concerns, such as finances, finding comparable work, explaining the gap, etc.].

Ask me 2-3 thoughtful questions to better understand my situation. Then help me separate what I can control right now from what I can’t. Finally, suggest 3 concrete actions I can take this week that would help me regain a sense of agency and momentum, even if they’re small steps.

2. Determine Your Optimal Return-To-Work Timeline

Not everyone needs to jump back into the job market immediately, and not everyone has the luxury of taking time off. This prompt helps you assess your financial runway and personal situation to create a realistic, intentional pivot plan.

ChatGPT Prompt:

I have [amount] in savings, [severance details if applicable], and monthly expenses of approximately [amount]. I [do/don’t] have dependents and [do/don’t] have a partner with income. I [do/don’t] have other revenue streams bringing in $[amount]/[period]. My health insurance situation is [COBRA, marketplace, covered by partner, etc.].

Based on this information, ask me 2-3 clarifying questions about my financial cushion and obligations. Then help me calculate a realistic timeline for my job search. Consider these scenarios among other potentially viable ones you see for me: (1) taking 1-2 months to plan an intentional return to work, (2) finding a “bridge job” to cover expenses while I search for my ideal role, or (3) starting my job search immediately. For each potential scenario, outline the pros, cons and what immediate actions I’d need to take. Finally, highlight any blind spots or considerations I may be overlooking.

3. Identify Future-Proof Roles And Industries Suited To Your Skills

Many of the same forces that drove mass layoffs in 2025—AI adoption, economic uncertainty, corporate restructuring—are also creating new opportunities. This prompt helps you pivot toward more resilient career paths.

ChatGPT Prompt:

My background is in [describe your field/industry] with [number] years of experience. My core skills include [list 5-7 skills]. I’m [open to/hesitant about] changing industries, and I’m particularly interested in work that involves [describe interests or values].

According to the World Economic Forum’s “Future of Jobs Report 2025,” roles spanning technology, healthcare, skilled trades, green energy, logistics and care work are expected to see substantial growth through 2030.

Ask me 2-3 questions to understand my constraints, preferences and risk tolerance. Then identify 3-5 specific roles or industries where my existing skills would transfer well, and that offer stronger job security and growth potential than my previous field. For each suggestion, explain the skills gap I’d need to address, certifications I should consider pursuing, and realistic paths to entry.

4. Build A “People-First” Job Search Strategy

One of the biggest mistakes job seekers can make after layoffs is hiding behind their computers, submitting cold applications. People hire people they know, like and trust. This prompt helps you activate your network and cultivate professional relationships strategically and with confidence.

ChatGPT Prompt:

I’m ready to start my job search for [target role/industry]. I’ve been out of work for [timeframe] after being laid off from [previous company]. My network includes [describe: former colleagues, industry contacts, alumni groups, professional associations, affinity groups, etc.]. I’m [comfortable/uncomfortable] with asking for help, and my biggest concern about reaching out is [describe fear or hesitation].

Ask me 2-3 questions to understand my network and comfort level. Then create a 30-day networking plan that prioritizes genuine connection over transactional asks. Include: (1) 5 specific people or groups I should reach out to and exactly what to say, (2) how to frame my layoff professionally and confidently, (3) how to ask for informational interviews without making people feel pressured, and (4) how to follow up and maintain relationships beyond just the job search.

5. Generate Side Hustle Ideas For Immediate Income

While searching for your next full-time role, a strategic side hustle can provide income, new skill sets, increased optionality and a renewed sense of confidence. This prompt identifies monetizable skills you already have.

This prompt identifies monetizable skills you already have.

ChatGPT Prompt:

I need to generate income while job searching. My professional background includes [describe experience], and I have skills in [list technical and soft skills]. I have approximately [number] hours per week available and [describe any equipment, certifications or resources you have access to].

Ask me up to 3 questions to understand my financial needs, time availability and comfort level with different types of work. Then suggest 5 specific side hustles I could start within the next 2 weeks that: (1) leverage skills I already have, (2) require minimal upfront investment, (3) could realistically generate [target amount] per month, and (4) won’t interfere with my job search. For your top 2 recommendations, outline the first 3 steps I’d need to take to launch them.

Turn Your Layoff Into A Strategic Pivot

Layoffs hit hard, especially in times like these. But with the right approach, this disruption can become a catalyst for building a more resilient, intentional and meaningful career. Use these prompts not just to land your next role, but to design a career path with better protection against future upheaval—whether that’s through developing more marketable skills, entering growing industries or building multiple income streams that provide true financial security and “career insurance.”
