How to Get Your First 100 Paid Coaching Hours Without Finding 100 Clients

You don't need 100 different coaching clients to accumulate 100 paid coaching hours. With the right strategy, you could reach that goal with as few as five clients—although if you're pursuing an ICF Associate Certified Coach (ACC) credential, you'll need experience with at least eight clients.

The key is to stop treating every coaching hour as a separate sales opportunity and start thinking about coaching packages, partnerships, and the professional relationships you already have.

In this video, I explain three strategies for getting your first—or next—100 paid coaching hours.

1. Package Your Coaching Services Instead of Selling One Session at a Time

Rather than trying to recruit 100 different coaching clients, start by identifying five, ten, or twenty people who might benefit from a more robust coaching engagement.

Consider offering a limited-time introductory coaching package. Even if you're relatively new to coaching, you're still providing a valuable service. You don't necessarily have to offer it for free.

Start with your existing network: LinkedIn connections, email contacts, and people who already know and trust you.

If someone isn't an appropriate coaching client, ask whether they know two or three people facing the kinds of challenges you help clients navigate—and whether they'd be comfortable making an introduction.

2. Partner With Organizations That Already Have Potential Coaching Clients

You don't have to build every client relationship from scratch.

Think about organizations that already serve your ideal coaching clients, such as:

  • Coaching companies

  • Professional associations

  • Colleges and universities

  • Career centers

  • Employers with professional development programs

You might offer an introductory coaching package for their members, employees, students, or clients.

The organization gets to provide additional value. Its audience receives coaching support. And you gain an opportunity to build coaching experience and relationships.

At Embrace Change, we recently created an accelerated coaching experience opportunity for four students in our Embrace Change Coaching Certification program. We connected them with clients through our existing relationships, giving those students opportunities to accumulate paid coaching hours toward ICF credentialing.

One important distinction: When you're coaching through an organizational partnership, you need to understand the contractual relationship and your responsibilities to the organization. Don't assume that the individuals receiving coaching are your clients you can independently solicit or retain outside that arrangement.

3. Identify Coaching Opportunities Through Your Existing Professional Ecosystem

If you're employed, explore whether your organization offers opportunities to coach colleagues or other employees.

ICF recognizes certain internal coaching arrangements as paid coaching experience, but specific eligibility rules apply. For example, coaching your direct reports doesn't qualify.

You should also review your employment agreements, conflict-of-interest obligations, and any restrictions on outside work before trying to establish an independent paid coaching arrangement involving people from your workplace.

Another option is to create opportunities through workshops or webinars.

Choose a problem your ideal coaching clients want to solve, offer a workshop that helps them make progress, and introduce your coaching package to attendees who want more individualized support.

A group workshop gives people a chance to experience your approach before committing to a longer one-on-one coaching relationship.

How Many Paid Coaching Hours Do You Need for ICF ACC Credentialing?

According to the International Coaching Federation, ACC applicants need:

  • At least 100 total client coaching hours

  • At least 75 paid coaching hours

  • Experience with at least eight clients

  • At least 25 hours completed within the 18 months before applying

Qualifying internal coaching and third-party coaching can count toward these requirements.

Turn Coaching Experience Into Income

Accumulating coaching hours is one milestone. Learning how to attract clients and turn coaching into a reliable source of income is another.

That's why it's worth thinking beyond your next credentialing requirement and considering how your coaching skills could contribute to your long-term financial goals.
